GTA 6 Map Size Explained: Every Confirmed Location in Leonida
Over the years, each Grand Theft Auto map has grown bigger than the last. To understand the scale of Leonida, the setting of GTA 6, it helps to look at how the series got here. This guide compares every major GTA map, then walks through each confirmed region of Leonida, including one major city Rockstar has yet to show properly.
GTA Map Sizes Compared: From GTA 3 to GTA 6
All sizes below are based on fan measurements, not official Rockstar figures.
| Game | Setting | Approx. size |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 3 (2001) | Liberty City | 3 sq. miles |
| GTA 4 (2008) | Liberty City (rebuilt) | 6 sq. miles |
| GTA 5 (2013) | Los Santos and Blaine County | 29 sq. miles |
| GTA 6 | Leonida | About 60 sq. miles |
GTA 3: Liberty City
GTA 3 took the series into 3D in 2001. The map covered roughly three square miles across three islands, and you couldn’t visit them all at once. The bridge to Portland is destroyed early on, so the story unlocks each new island, with a loading screen every time you cross. The city was dark, gray and rainy, but at the time, driving anywhere in a 3D city felt huge.
GTA 4: A Bigger, Rebuilt Liberty City
Seven years later, Rockstar rebuilt Liberty City from scratch. The map doubled to about six square miles and was much closer to real New York, with versions of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Manhattan and New Jersey. There was no countryside, so every part of the map was dense city. Loading screens between islands were gone, but the bridges stayed locked at first because of a terror alert.
GTA 5: Los Santos and Blaine County
GTA 5 jumped to about 29 square miles, nearly five times the size of GTA 4. It mixed a large city with plenty of open land: beaches, desert, the Alamo Sea, Mount Chiliad, small towns like Sandy Shores, and a full ocean floor.
Rockstar said it was larger than Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas and GTA 4 combined, and the whole map was open from the start. The common complaint was that the countryside felt empty, with little reason to head north past Sandy Shores.
GTA 6: Leonida
At around 60 square miles, Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5 and 20 times larger than GTA 3’s Liberty City. Here is what fills that space.
Vice City: The Heart of GTA 6
Vice City is Rockstar’s version of Miami, and most of the game takes place here. Rockstar has named several districts.
Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, Flea Market and the VC Port
- Ocean Beach: pastel hotels, white sand, neon signs, supercars, lifeguards and tourists. This is the area seen most in the trailers.
- Little Cuba: the new take on the original Vice City’s Little Havana, packed with Cuban bakeries and Latin shops.
- Flea market area: a place where people sell knockoff brands (the name appears as “Kishawaka” in the source material).
- VC Port: the cruise ship port, which Rockstar calls the cruise ship capital of the world.
The Ocean View Hotel from the original Vice City returns, and Rockstar showed Jason and Lucia standing outside it. The vintage Vice City pack also includes a garage called Shore Court, near Ocean Beach, with a weapon locker and storage for stolen goods until you can sell them to a fence.
Stockyard, La Pearl and the South Side
- Stockyard is based on Wynwood in Miami and is the street art and car meet district. Two shops are named: a clothing store called Stock 305 and a tattoo shop called Electric Fang.
- La Pearl is this game’s version of Little Haiti, with an elevated train line running through it, visible in the second trailer.
- The South Side is another named area. One bonus mission in the Ultimate Edition involves raiding a gang compound there.
Downtown Vice City
Downtown is where the tall glass buildings are. Key spots include:
- Sahara Arena, home of the basketball team the Vice City Narcos. It is based on the Kaseya Center, where the Miami Heat play. Rockstar actually paid to put a giant “Welcome to Vice City” sign on the roof of the real arena.
- Club 919, the nightclub where Jason and Lucia dance in the second trailer.
- A Ferris wheel by the water.
Downtown sits right next to the port, where much of the cargo smuggling is expected to happen.
Bobby Ike’s Businesses and the Rich Islands
Bobby Ike runs the Jack of Hearts Strip Club and a record label called Only Raw Records with his partner D’Quan Priest. The club is in Cross Town, in the middle of the city and based on Overtown in Miami. In the second trailer, he sums up his business model: the club money pays for the studio, and the drug money pays for everything.
Off the coast are wealthy islands with mansions and yachts, including Starfish Island (returning from the original Vice City) and Gloriana Key, next to the port. Expect celebrity parodies living there, as in real Miami.
Hamlet
South of the city is Hamlet, based on Homestead, Florida, the last town before the bridges to the Keys. On the fan map, the Leonida Penitentiary, where Lucia was imprisoned, is nearby. Hamlet appeared in the first trailer through a social media clip, a live stream posted by an account called Lucha Libre Fan. Wrestling is a confirmed side activity, so a wrestling ring out here wouldn’t be a surprise. The main airport for the region is Vice City International.
The Leonida Keys: Where Jason’s Story Begins
The Leonida Keys are Rockstar’s version of the Florida Keys, a chain of islands at the very bottom of the map connected by long bridges. Jason’s story starts here. Rockstar describes life as simple and easy, with a casual dress code and always-full bars. Jason does dirty work for a drug smuggler named Brian Heder and lives in one of Brian’s properties for free. The Keys have a long history of smuggling, going back to the 70s and 80s.
Key Lento and Surroundings
- Key Lento is based on Key Largo. Brian runs Brian’s Boat Works and Marina here, the base of his smuggling operation.
- The Leonida Marine Center is a boating shop on the island.
- A green and blue beach house on stilts is expected to be Jason and Lucia’s first home, provided by Brian.
- The Rusty Anchor bar hosts a confirmed side activity: pool.
- Other islands on the fan map include Goose Key and East Key, plus a naval air base.
Water, Diving and the Causeway
Rockstar says the water around the Keys is both beautiful and dangerous. The Atlantic side is deep and rough, suited to deep sea fishing and shipwrecks. The Gulf side is shallow and full of mangroves, which makes it a good place to lose the police. Scuba diving and boat tours are also available. The Keys Causeway, starting near Hamlet, is the only road linking the Keys to the mainland.
The Grass Rivers: Leonida’s Everglades
The Grass Rivers are Rockstar’s take on the Everglades, a huge swamp south and west of Vice City with shallow water, mangroves and canals. The main way to travel is by airboat. Rockstar calls it a wild part of Leonida that nobody has ever tamed, and many buildings stand on stilts, as in the real Everglades.
Wildlife, Poachers and Law Enforcement
Alligators are everywhere, but Rockstar hints that there are worse animals than the gators, along with strange discoveries hidden in the mangroves. Footage shows armed poachers and people trafficking alligators. A group called Poach, the game’s version of Florida’s wildlife officers, patrols the swamp in its own pickup trucks. In the second trailer, an attack helicopter chases an airboat through the swamp. Locals are likely inspired by the real-life Gladesmen, who live off hunting and trapping.
Watson Bay
Watson Bay is the main settlement: a rough waterfront town with buildings over the water, beat-up docks, fishing boats, a motel and a bar. Ultimate Edition owners get the Paradise Garage here, which can store a monster truck and offers the same weapon locker and stolen goods storage as Shore Court. A small island called Bobcat Key sits nearby on the fan map, and Rockstar has shown an airboat set up for fishing.
Port Gellhorn: Leonida’s Forgotten Coast
Port Gellhorn is on the far west coast in Kelly County and is based on Panama City Beach, once a major spring break destination. Rockstar calls this stretch of the state Leonida’s forgotten coast, full of cheap motels and closed attractions. The town runs on cheap booze, painkillers and truck stop energy drinks, with the same rundown feel as Sandy Shores in GTA 5, including bikers and drug dealing.
Town and Industrial Sides
The residential side has a train running through it, and many of the trailer’s car jumps and dirt bike scenes take place here. It is also where Jason and Lucia rob Uncle Jack’s Liquor at the end of the first trailer, and where the Starlet Motel appears. Dive bars add two more confirmed activities: pool and darts. The other side is Draper Island, an industrial area with warehouses, docks, cranes and a giant factory.
Gellhorn International Raceway
The biggest attraction is Gellhorn International Raceway, which would be the first full-size race track in a GTA game. Its name appeared in the 2022 leaks, and Lucia wears a Gellhorn International shirt in the second trailer.
Rockstar showed a race there with a lap counter, timer and position display. Fans say a nearby drag strip is based on Gainesville Raceway, and the trailers also show a motocross track, with dirt bike trails across the map. Offshore, the fan map shows small islands called the Crude Islands and Sand Bars.
Ambrosia: Sugar, Bikers and Politics
Ambrosia sits in the middle of Leonida, west of Vice City, next to Lake Leonida. It is based on Clewiston, Florida, a sugar town beside Lake Okeechobee, with elements of Moore Haven. Its motto is “Keeping Leonida Sweet.”
A Town Built on Sugar
Sugarcane fields surround the town, and Rockstar showed one being burned before harvest, a real farming practice in Florida. The largest employer is the Allied Crystal Sugar Refinery. The main street includes a Cuban food spot called Blanco’s, a kids’ dentist and a car wash. The town has its own Ambrosia Police Department.
The Final Chapter MC
Rockstar’s description says the refinery gives people jobs and the local biker gang handles almost everything else. The gang is the Final Chapter MC, and the patches on their vests say they started in 1982. Jason is chased by them at a biker bar called the Thirsty Wolf. Fans suspect the bikers do the dirty work the sugar company can’t be seen doing.
Election Season and Off-Roading
An election is underway, with yard signs for mayoral candidate Aaron Henshaw, apparently backed by the sugar company. Ambrosia is also the off-road part of the map, seen in the muddy truck party in the first trailer. A mod shop near the lake called One-Eyed Willie’s handles off-road upgrades. Lake Leonida, based on Lake Okeechobee, should be a strong fishing spot.
Mount Kalaga National Park: The Northern Wilderness
Mount Kalaga National Park sits at the top of the map in Lumox County, against the northern border. It is based on North Florida and Georgia, and the canyon resembles Providence Canyon in Georgia. The name comes from a Cherokee word meaning east or sunrise. On the fan map, a highway wraps around the park and acts as the border with the neighboring state of Gloriana, the game’s version of Georgia. Gloriana license plates appear in the second trailer, but players apparently can’t go there, at least for now.
Hunting, Fishing and Wildlife
Rockstar says the park has some of the best hunting, fishing and off-road trails in the state. Expect forests, canyons, rivers for kayaking and trails for ATVs and dirt bikes. Hunting is a real way to make money, and fishing is confirmed too.
Animals include deer, foxes and cougars, and they behave realistically, such as a cougar stalking a herd of deer in one screenshot. The locals are a colorful bunch: Rockstar mentions hillbillies with strange beliefs and anti-government types who want to be left alone.
Honorable Mentions: Water, Air Strips and the Mini Map
Water Is Everywhere
Rivers, lakes and canals run across Leonida, so kayaks and small boats can travel far inland. When the map leaked in August, one of the first things fans noticed was the amount of water, even in the middle of the state. You can dive in the ocean to find shipwrecks and hidden items, and underwater is another way to hide from police, depending on the depth and clarity of the water.
Air Strips
Small air strips are scattered across the map. Since Florida was a center of drug smuggling in the 80s, many are likely tied to smuggling runs.
Mini Map Options
Players can choose between a classic always-on mini map or a small compass, or turn the mini map off completely. Police no longer appear as dots on the mini map. Instead, you watch the screen edge for warnings or use focus mode to spot them through walls.
Capri: The City Rockstar Hasn’t Shown
Rockstar has kept one major city largely hidden: Capri. It sits in the southwest of the map, south of Port Gellhorn, in Mariana County. The name first appeared on a highway sign in Rockstar’s extended look video. In the August leaks, fans saw Jason robbing two gas stations on the edge of town, and highway signs pointed to two areas: the city center and the waterfront. Capri has its own separate police department.
Where Capri Gets Its Inspiration
Capri is based on three real Florida cities:
- Naples: the beach, the pier and the name (Capri is an island near Naples, Italy)
- Sebring: the central roundabout and the stadium
- Lakeland: some of the tall buildings by the lake
The city even has its own sports team, the Capri City Jackals. The fan map shows a central park, a pier on the west side and a large lake in the northeast beside a train line. Capri may also have appeared in the first trailer, where a green pickup truck races past buildings that match the leaked footage.
Final Thoughts
Leonida is not just bigger than previous GTA maps. With Vice City, the Keys, the Grass Rivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga and Capri, it covers a wide range of environments, from neon beaches to swamps, forests, race tracks and sugar towns. If density matches the scale, GTA 6 could be the most varied GTA world yet.
